Clearing around Huntsville covers a lot of ground. North of the city, rolling farmland around Hazel Green and Meridianville tends to grow up in cedar, privet and sweetgum. To the east and southeast, Monte Sano and the Appalachian foothills bring steep slopes, limestone and big hardwoods. Nearly everywhere you dig, you find red clay. Each of those conditions changes the right equipment and the right finish.

Building lots and construction

Prepare ground for a house, shop or driveway with a defined handoff to your builder.

  • Land Clearing

Turn overgrown or wooded Huntsville ground into usable space with a written scope.

  • Lot Clearing

Open a house lot for the builder while saving shade trees near the footprint.

  • Site Preparation

Clearing, rough grading and erosion control to hand a buildable pad to your builder.

  • Driveway Clearing

Cut a driveway or access road path through woods to a homesite or back field.

Brush, woods and acreage

Open up overgrown land, keep the good trees and decide how the material is handled.

  • Forestry Mulching

Grind brush and small trees into mulch where they stand, with no burn piles.

  • Brush Clearing

Cut back privet, kudzu, briars and underbrush that have swallowed a yard or field.

  • Selective Clearing

Remove the undergrowth and weak trees while keeping healthy hardwoods.

  • Acreage Clearing

Clear several acres for pasture, a homestead or recreation, in phases if needed.

Finishing work

Deal with fence rows, stumps and leftover debris.

  • Fence Line Clearing

Open a straight, workable strip so new fence can go up or old fence can be fixed.

  • Stump Grinding

Grind leftover stumps below grade so you can mow, seed or build.

  • Debris Haul-Off

Load and truck away logs, brush and stumps when burning or mulching will not work.

Decide what the ground is for

The finished use drives the whole scope. A house pad needs stumps and roots out and usually some grading. A pasture needs brush knocked down and the surface smooth enough to mow and seed. A trail or hunting lane may only need a mulcher to pass once. Start with the end use and the contractor can recommend the method that fits rather than the most expensive one.

Walk the property if you can. Flag trees worth keeping, note gates and the widest access point, and mark wells, septic fields, springs and any depressions that might be sinkholes. Karst ground is common in this part of Alabama, and a contractor needs to know where it is before machines roll in.

Burning, stormwater and local rules

Inside Huntsville city limits, open burning is not allowed unless it is permitted through the Huntsville Fire & Rescue Bureau of Fire Prevention. Outside the city, Alabama law requires an Alabama Forestry Commission burn permit for outdoor burning of a quarter acre or more, and those permits can be cancelled when weather or smoke conditions become hazardous. Construction material, tires and household garbage cannot be burned under ADEM rules.

Disturbing roughly one acre or more generally requires ADEM construction stormwater (NPDES) coverage and erosion controls such as silt fence. The City of Huntsville and the City of Madison each have their own land-disturbance and grading rules. Check with ADEM and your city or Madison County before work starts, and ask the contractor who will handle any filings.

Get comparable written quotes

Ask for the scope in writing: the clearing limits, trees to be saved, stump treatment, what happens to the debris and the condition the ground is left in. If one quote mulches in place and another hauls everything away, they are not pricing the same job. The land clearing cost guide walks through the factors that move a price.

Before you sign, confirm the qualifications that apply to the work, proof of coverage, the payment schedule and how changes will be approved if the crew finds buried debris or rock.
