Inside Huntsville city limits, open burning is not allowed unless it is permitted through the Huntsville Fire & Rescue Bureau of Fire Prevention, so hauling or chipping is often the practical choice for city lots.
Three ways to handle the material
Mulching in place is usually the least handling but leaves chips on the ground. Burning, where permitted, avoids trucking but depends on permits and weather; outside the city, the Alabama Forestry Commission requires a permit for outdoor burning of a quarter acre or more and can cancel permits in hazardous conditions. Hauling leaves the cleanest surface but adds loading, trucking and disposal fees.
Many jobs mix the three, such as hauling logs and stumps while mulching the brush.
What cannot go in a burn pile
ADEM rules prohibit burning construction material, tires and household garbage. If old sheds, fencing, mattresses or dumped trash are mixed into the brush, those items have to be separated and hauled to an appropriate facility.
Tell the contractor about any dumped material up front so it can be priced.
Truck access and distance

Sometimes. Large, straight hardwood or pine logs may have value; ask the contractor or a local forester.
Can a contractor haul only the piles I already made?
Yes. Describe the pile size and access in your request. A contractor can quote loading and disposal alone.
